Malena Lott l with Tina, her best friend of 22 years. When we were children, we played with our friends until our mamas called us in for supper. We went on big adventures, even if it was in our own back yards. When we were children, we explored the libraries with wild abandon and read until our little eyes were blurry with sleep. Time and money? So busy with their work and families that we rarely see them enough to giggle and weep together. But the TV is so big and shiny and…. Time to take back our fervor for adventure and passion for friendships and our love of books. Friends and books do that for us.

A young widow, year-old Ramona Griffen, searches for joy with the help of a handsome younger Italian immigrant named Leonardo da Vinci. Her humorous and heartwarming journey takes her on some unexpected adventures of body, mind and spirit as she learns to let go of her grief to make room for a wholly new life. How did you get the title of your book? The title came pretty quickly, early on. I do like getting credit for this one, though!

What pulled you into this story, and as a writer made you think I have to write this What do you consider the heart of your story? Women, especially mothers, tend to put themselves last on the list. I wanted to share the story of someone who has lost the love of her life and has focused on just “getting by” each day, but is ready to find a way to be joyful again, even through the pain.

The heart of the story really is, is there love after death, and the courage it takes to not only survive but to build a great life again. I spend a great deal of time with character names, even when I snatch them from real life.

What was your inspiration for the book, and for your character, da Vinci? My inspiration was from dealing with my own grief. It never goes away, but does transform your spirit. There is a loss and longing there that never goes away, which is why Ramona refers to it as Before and After and Grievers and Normals. You have a new kind of normal after a loss.

A gorgeous young Italian, with nowhere to go. His name just happens to be Leonardo da Vinci. Although this novel deals with the weighty issue of recovering from the death of a spouse, it remains a light, fun and fluffy story throughout. Ramona, the main character, is a linguist and English teacher, as well as a mom to two boys. She is writing her PhD thesis about the language of love, and excerpts from her thesis are included and work well within the context of the story.

All of that changes though, when Leonardo da Vinci, a student in her class, shows her that life can be full of joy again.
