University of the Third Age Brisbane
The first University of the Third Age was founded in Toulouse, France in as a summer school catering exclusively for retired people. The movement grew as an academic organisation associated with French universities. When the idea moved across to the United Kingdom ten years later, it established itself as a self-help organisation.
The U3A is now worldwide.
Dates for your Diary. 22 August 20 July by Saturday 28 November – U3A Port Phillip Annual General Meeting. Friday 4 December – end Term 4.
Monday 5 October – Term 4 begins – Classes resume online with Zoom unless social distancing restrictions are lifted. Click on the arrow to see the answers to the questions below. Links to U3A meetings will be emailed only to the participants in that class. All meetings will be set up with a password to prevent hackers from getting in by trying a random meeting number. But most of what will be transmitted in U3APP classes would not be of interest to anyone else, anyway. Keep your Zoom software up to date, for security reasons.
Zoom audio and video are both encrypted. It is probably no riskier than using Facebook or Google, both of whom capture data about you and what you are doing. Microsoft Teams is designed for use by closed, fixed teams working in collaboration within a company, where all users have access to the same software and hardware. Microsoft Teams operates differently on different devices, which makes it harder for a community like U3APP to use.
Zoom , on the other hand, works well, is easy to use on a variety of devices, has no cost for our members and is affordable for U3APP. Security is not a high priority for U3APP because we are not transmitting confidential information that could be of interest or use to others.
Members Information. Virtual Groups Are Here! Virtual Groups using Zoom are now available. More details can be found by clicking here.

Click here for a programme. U3A is an abbreviation for University of the Third Age , an organisation which aims to provide educational stimulus and support for older people. U3A was founded in Toulouse, France in , with academic programmes offered to older people by Universities. The concept was introduced in Britain in by a group from Cambridge University. British U3As quickly evolved away from courses chosen by Universities, to the idea of self help or mutual-aid universities.
By drawing upon the skills and interests of its members. U3As tap the huge resources of skills and experience which exists among Third Age People, and which is largely ignored in the wider community. Among members of a U3A you will always find some people who are willing to share their knowledge with others by acting as course leaders or tutors.
